At The Holistic Psychiatry Clinic, we understand trauma not as something that is “wrong” with you, but as the nervous system’s intelligent response to overwhelming experiences. Our trauma pathway offers a carefully contained, medically informed and non-pathologising approach to stabilisation and integration – designed to help you feel safer in yourself and more able to live fully again.

This pathway is designed for people who feel ready to engage in a steady, reflective process rather than seeking a quick fix.

Trauma is not a flaw – it is an adaptation

Many people come to us feeling broken, ashamed or exhausted by their symptoms. They may have tried therapy, medication or self-help approaches, yet still feel unsafe in their own body or mind.

We work from a different starting point.

Trauma responses such as hypervigilance, shutdown, emotional numbness or self-criticism are not signs of failure. They are signs that your system did what it needed to do to survive.

Beneath these patterns, there remains an innate psychological wellbeing and wisdom that has never been damaged. Our work is about helping your system settle enough for this inner steadiness to come back into view.

A psychospiritually informed mental health support pathway

This pathway integrates three strands of understanding:

  1. Psychological – how trauma shapes patterns of thought, emotion and behaviour
  2. Physiological – how the nervous system responds to threat, overwhelm and chronic stress
  3. Spiritual – the human capacity for meaning, inner clarity and wellbeing beyond symptoms

By psychospiritual, we do not mean religion or belief systems. We mean an approach that honours the depth of human experience without reducing distress to diagnoses or defects.

This pathway does not involve forced exposure, re-living traumatic events or “fixing” you. It unfolds at a pace guided by safety and readiness, not pressure.

This pathway may be right for you if…

  • You’ve tried therapy or psychiatric treatment but still feel stuck

You do not need to have a diagnosis or a clear trauma narrative to benefit from this work.

Safety comes first

To ensure care is appropriate and safe, this pathway is not suitable if you are currently:

  • At immediate risk of suicide or serious self-harm
  • Experiencing acute psychosis or severe dissociation requiring specialist services
  • Living in an ongoing unsafe or abusive environment
  • In need of crisis or inpatient care

If this applies, we will support you to access the right level of help and coordinate with statutory services where appropriate.

We begin by helping you understand trauma in a way that reduces fear and self-blame. Many people experience relief simply by realising their reactions make sense.

Stabilisation and nervous system support
We focus on helping your system feel more supported in daily life – through simple, practical approaches that promote regulation, rest and safety.

Understanding patterns without blame
As trust builds, we explore recurring inner patterns as protective responses rather than problems, allowing them to soften naturally.

Meaning and integration
Over time, you are supported to make sense of your story without being defined by it – restoring agency, dignity and perspective.

Reconnection with innate wellbeing
As the system settles, many people experience greater inner steadiness, clarity and self-trust – not because something was added, but because what was always there becomes accessible again.

Psychiatric expertise where it matters

As a psychiatrist-led clinic, we bring particular awareness to:

  • The nervous system effects of psychiatric medication
  • Medication withdrawal and iatrogenic trauma
  • Sleep, substances and physiological contributors to distress
  • Collaborative work with GPs and other clinicians

Psychiatry here is used to support safety, understanding and informed choice – not to override lived experience.

What to expect

Most people begin with a structured foundation phase of six weekly 90-minute sessions. This allows time for stabilisation, understanding and early integration without rushing the process.

Continuation beyond this phase is always discussed collaboratively, based on readiness, outcomes and what feels genuinely supportive.
