An alternative approach to conventional psychiatry — consultant-led, thoughtful, and whole-person
Many people describe our work as alternative psychiatry – not because it rejects medicine, but because it offers an alternative to rushed, reductionist models of care.
At The Holistic Psychiatry Clinic, we offer a different kind of private psychiatric care. One that combines consultant-level medical expertise with whole-person understanding, careful medication strategy, and a strong emphasis on personal agency and inner clarity.
This is psychiatry designed to support long-term wellbeing, not just symptom control.
When conventional psychiatry hasn’t addressed the whole picture
Many people are told their difficulties are primarily biological, requiring long-term medication with little exploration of context. Yet emotional distress is rarely caused by chemistry alone.
In our experience, people struggle not because they are “treatment resistant”, but because important factors have been overlooked – life stress, trauma, neurodivergence, relationships, identity, lifestyle, and meaning.
Without space to explore these, care can become repetitive, disempowering, and overly focused on management rather than understanding.
This is where many people begin looking for an alternative to standard psychiatric care – one that takes context, meaning, and agency seriously.
Holistic and alternative psychiatry - clearly defined
When we use the term alternative psychiatry, we are not referring to unregulated or non-medical practice. We mean an alternative way of practising psychiatry – one that retains medical responsibility while expanding beyond narrow biological explanations.
Our approach to holistic psychiatry is grounded in medical rigour and intellectual honesty.
We value diagnosis and medication when used thoughtfully, but we do not see them as complete explanations for human suffering. Mental health cannot be reduced to symptoms or neurotransmitters alone.
Instead, we work with the whole person – psychological, biological, relational, lifestyle, and existential factors – supporting insight, responsibility, and informed choice.
This often resonates with people who feel that something essential was missing from previous psychiatric care.
A credible alternative to conventional psychiatric care
Our clinic is often sought out by people actively searching for an alternative psychiatry approach – one that is still medically grounded, but less rigid, less rushed, and more human.
This approach may be right for you if:
• You feel stuck despite previous psychiatric or psychological treatment
• You want deeper understanding, not just symptom management
• You are exploring medication reduction with specialist support
• You value collaborative, consultant-led decision-making
• You want care that respects your intelligence, autonomy, and lived experience
(If you are seeking rapid prescriptions or purely protocol-based treatment, we may not be the right clinic for you.)
What makes our private psychiatric clinic different
Consultant psychiatrist-led care
All assessments and follow-ups are led directly by experienced UK consultant psychiatrists.
Depth and time
We prioritise listening, reflection, and thoughtful pacing over rushed appointments.
Careful medication and deprescribing support
We support both prescribing and safe medication reduction, tailored to the individual rather than rigid guidelines.
Ethical independence
Our recommendations are guided by clinical judgement and integrity, not external targets or incentives.
What working with us is like
We take time to understand patterns, context, and what matters to you.
Appointments are unhurried and conversations are exploratory rather than directive.
Recommendations are made collaboratively and paced carefully, with space to reflect rather than pressure to comply.
The aim is not dependency on the process, but clearer thinking, steadier inner ground, and practical next steps that feel owned by you.
About the founders
The Holistic Psychiatry Clinic was founded by two UK-trained consultant psychiatrists who recognised the limits of standard mental health models when depth, time, and whole-person understanding are missing.
Rather than working within systems that prioritised throughput over thoughtfulness, we chose to create a clinic focused on clarity, responsibility, and ethical care.
Dr Rani Bora, MBBS, FRCPsych, PGCE
Consultant Psychiatrist, Coach, Educator & Speaker
Rani works with individuals who feel disconnected from themselves after prolonged stress, trauma, or emotional overload.
Alongside her psychiatric background, she brings depth-oriented coaching and trauma-informed insight, helping people move beyond coping towards greater inner freedom and self-trust.
Her work combines psychiatric training with tools like NLP, EFT (tapping), and mental health coaching – helping people reconnect with their emotional resilience and innate wellbeing.
Rani is especially passionate about deprescribing, trauma-informed care, and leading a movement toward what she calls mental wealth – thriving beyond diagnosis, with self-trust and purpose.
Dr Suraj Gogoi, MBBS, MRCPsych, MBA
Consultant Psychiatrist, Coach, Educator
Suraj works with adults who feel constrained by diagnoses, overwhelmed by complex histories, or reliant on treatments that never fully addressed the roots of their distress. Many of the people he supports have done “everything right” within conventional systems, yet are left with unanswered questions about why they still feel stuck, disconnected, or unsure of themselves.
His work integrates conventional psychiatry with a broader, more searching inquiry into stress physiology, neurodivergence, lifestyle patterns, relationships, personal narrative, and long-term medication use. Rather than viewing symptoms in isolation, Suraj is interested in how a person’s inner world, life context, and sense of agency interact over time – and how clarity can emerge when these are explored thoughtfully.
He has a particular interest in safe, ethical deprescribing, especially where medication has become a substitute for understanding rather than a support for recovery. This work is approached carefully and collaboratively, with respect for both the benefits and limitations of psychiatric medication, and without ideological rigidity.
At the heart of Suraj’s approach is a commitment to treating people as intelligent, capable adults. His aim is not to manage or reassure, but to help individuals regain confidence in their own understanding, make informed choices, and develop a steadier relationship with their inner experience.
